A table at Les Grands Buffets at the last minute

Updated · Official information checked on

Can you get a table at Les Grands Buffets at the last minute?

Yes, and it is often the best moment. Cancellations occur every day right up to the eve of the meal, and every released table is put straight back up for booking. The difficulty is not availability but speed: a table that reappears can be taken again within minutes.

It is counter-intuitive at a restaurant booked months ahead, but the “fully booked” display describes the moment, not the week to come. The restaurant acknowledges it itself: cancellations occur every day right up to the eve of the meal.

What changes inside 37 days of the meal?

Cancellation cover is no longer offered. Any booking made at 37 days or less from the date is taken with a deposit of €20 per person, which comes off the price of the menus but is not refunded if you cancel. Booking late therefore commits you more.

This is the one real drawback of the last minute, and it is worth knowing before you commit. For a table of four it means €80 paid at booking, deducted from the €263.60 of menus if you come, lost if you cancel. On the other hand there is no separate prepayment left to manage: at this point the booking is settled in one go.

When are the best moments to find a last-minute table?

Eleven days before the meal first: that is the final deadline for cancelling and getting the prepayment back, and many customers wait for it. After that, any day up to the eve, with no favoured hour: late drop-outs land at all times.

If your date is still more than a month away, the biggest wave remains the 29-day one, when bookings left unpaid are cancelled automatically. The full cancellation calendar is set out here.

Is lunch easier to get than dinner?

Generally yes, and small tables free up more often than large ones. Widening your criteria mechanically increases your chances of catching a seat: accepting lunch, aiming for two or four guests rather than eight, keeping several dates open.

The real obstacle: speed

At the last minute the problem is no longer knowing when to look, since it is every day. It is being in front of the screen at the right moment. A seat released at 11pm on a Tuesday will not wait for you until the next morning, and there is no waiting list to tell you.

Three precautions change a great deal: having already created your account on the restaurant’s site, having decided in advance which dates and party sizes you would accept, and not relying on refreshing by hand a few times a day.

Be told rather than watch. GetTable checks availability continuously, day and night, and sends you a text message as soon as a table matches your criteria. The service does not book on your behalf: it alerts you, you book on the official site. One-off payment, no subscription, a full refund if no alert was sent to you before your date.
