Cancellations at Les Grands Buffets: when tables free up

Updated · Official information checked on · Reading time: 5 minutes

The restaurant is booked months ahead and yet tables free up every day. This is not luck: cancellations follow a fairly precise calendar, imposed by the restaurant’s own booking terms. Knowing it changes your chances completely.

Are there cancellations at Les Grands Buffets?

Yes, every day, and right up to the eve of the meal. The restaurant says so itself: every cancelled booking is put straight back on sale on its site. That is why a place booked solid months ahead nonetheless keeps finding tables.

The word “full” on a booking site is a snapshot, not a verdict. It describes the state of the tables at the second the page loaded. That stock moves constantly, and it moves both ways: people book, others drop out.

What makes these releases usable is that they are not spread at random. Two dates concentrate most of the movement, and both follow from the restaurant’s booking terms.

When do tables free up most at Les Grands Buffets?

The biggest wave lands 29 days before the meal: bookings whose menus have not been prepaid are cancelled automatically. A second, smaller wave comes 11 days before, the final deadline for cancelling and getting the prepayment back. Between the two, and up to the eve, isolated cancellations occur every day.

Between 60 and 30 days before: the prepayment window

Menus can be paid in full from 60 days before the meal, and must be paid no later than 30 days before. This is the period when hesitant customers make up their minds, or give up. The first releases appear here, in a trickle.

At 29 days: the big wave

This is the key moment. Bookings whose menus were not prepaid in time are cancelled in full and automatically. Every seat held by customers who never followed through drops back into circulation at once. If you were to watch only one moment, this is it.

The restaurant says so itself in its FAQ, with an example: for a meal on 31 August, it is 2 August you need to watch.

At 11 days: the second wave

This is the final deadline for cancelling and getting the prepayment back. Those who know they will not come have every reason to say so before this date, and the restaurant finds that many wait for precisely this day. The wave is smaller than at 29 days, but quite real.

And in between: the background noise

Isolated cancellations occur every day up to the eve. They are unpredictable but constant. That is what makes continuous watching pay: over several weeks, opportunities do come.

What happens to a cancelled seat at Les Grands Buffets?

It goes straight back into the booking calendar, exactly like a table never booked. Nobody is told and nobody has priority: the seat goes to the first customer who sees it on the official site.

This is the difference between a cancellation here and a drop-out at a restaurant that calls back its waiting customers: at Les Grands Buffets there is no waiting list. The released table is offered to nobody in particular: it reappears on the calendar, for everyone at the same time.

The consequence is blunt and worth stating: a cancelled seat can disappear very fast. On the slots we have followed, some lasted only a few minutes. What we observe is published here.

Why is Les Grands Buffets always fully booked?

The restaurant charges a single price for an all-you-can-eat buffet of unusual scale, which draws far more demand than the dining room can absorb. Slots go as soon as they open, often months in advance. But some of those very early bookings never come to anything.

The set menu is €65.90 per person, one price whatever the guest’s age, and the restaurant is open 365 days a year. The relationship between what the house offers and what it asks explains most of the pressure on bookings.

“Full” therefore does not mean “permanently full”. Some of the bookings made very far ahead never come to anything: plans change, trips are cancelled, and above all bookings lapse of their own accord for want of prepayment.

How far ahead should you book at Les Grands Buffets?

As early as possible if you are after a precise date, particularly a weekend or a holiday period: that is what the restaurant itself recommends. If you are flexible on the date, watching for cancellations is more effective than booking early.

The two strategies are not mutually exclusive. Booking early gives you the date you want; watching for cancellations gives you a date, sooner, without having to decide six months ahead. If you have a hard constraint — a birthday, a dated trip — book as soon as slots open and leave nothing to chance.

What does a booking at Les Grands Buffets cost if you cancel?

When you book, and provided it is at least 37 days before the meal, you choose between two options. Cancellation cover, at €5 per person, lets you cancel free of charge until 11 days before; it is non-refundable and is not deducted from the meal. A deposit, at €20 per person, is deducted from the meal but is lost if you cancel. At 37 days or less from the date, cancellation cover is no longer offered.

In practice, for a table of four: €20 of cancellation cover, or €80 of deposit that will come off the €263.60 of menus. The cover costs less but stays with the restaurant in every case; the deposit costs more upfront but is not lost if you come.

These terms are the ones published by the restaurant and may change: check them on its official page when you book.

How to give yourself the best chance

Prepare your account in advance, widen your criteria, target the wave dates, and do not rely on refreshing by hand. These four habits count for more than luck.

  1. Create your account now. Booking is done exclusively online, from a personal account that every new customer must create. When a table appears you have a few minutes, sometimes less: an account already set up saves you thirty seconds, and thirty seconds are enough to lose the table.
  2. Widen your criteria. A table for 2 frees up far more often than a table for 8. Lunch is less contested than dinner. Accepting several dates mechanically multiplies your chances.
  3. Target the waves. If your ideal date is two months away, note the day that falls 29 days before: that is when to pay attention.
  4. Do not rely on refreshing by hand. Checking the site three times a day is not enough: released seats often go within minutes, at any hour, including at night.
Watching in your place. That is exactly what GetTable does: the service checks availability continuously, day and night, and sends you a text message as soon as a table matches your criteria. One-off payment, no subscription, and if no alert is sent to you before your date, you are refunded in full.
